when you see something on tv and instantly recognize yourself

you've all done that, right? i don't mean just identify with a character. but sat there thinking "oh my god, i remember doing that. i remember getting exactly that response, too!"

okay, maybe not. but i have. you have by now seen the "who would you give a volvo to?" commercials, yes? the one with the kid who just keeps talking and talking and talking and her father is walking around trying to "mm hmm" and get things done and looking like he hopes she'll stop soon? i am that kid. apparently we took a car trip once (aka moved across the country) and my parents were each driving a car, and they'd just trade me off between the cars because i didn't shut up. just making understanding noises wasn't enough action on their part, either; i wanted a response, god damn it. a good one. funny how some things never change, isn't it?

the first time i saw the commercial, i got all confused because i was simultaneously remembering doing exactly that and i couldn't separate my life from the commercial. it was weird. and then my mother called me tonight to tell me about it, only all she had to say was "have you seen that car commercial?" and i finished the rest of the thought for her while she laughed.

sadly, however, the volvo commercials do not make me want to purchase a volvo. instead they make me think of the fray's lead singer's best friend -- who used to come into the coffee shop -- because he was all excited one day about having bought a volvo. and he's just frickin' adorable. but he drinks only soy, it worries me when men do that. and i'm sure that's EXACTLY the line of thought volvo intended.

i really should come with drugs, shouldn't i?
