this is what happens instead of productivity
aside: nothing beats the mild euphoria of re-discovering paperchase products in borders (right next to the jordi labanda journals). london left me with many addictions, of which paperchase may just be the strongest. yes, i can live on the little things. smile...

i was flipping through the unbearable lightness of being again, thinking about all the directions kundera manages to cover in one book, and found this:
"they [human lives] are composed like music. guided by his sense of beauty, an individual transforms a fortuitous occurrence... into a motif, which then assumes a permanent place in the composition of the individual's life.... without realizing it, the individual composes his life according to the laws of beauty even in times of great distress.
"it is wrong, then to chide the novel for being fascinated by mysterious coincidences... but it is right to chide man for being blind to such coincidences in his daily life. for he thereby deprives his life of a dimension of beauty." (52)
it makes sense to me. i can find motifs that are constant and some that change, discarded and replaced as i need new importance. it fits with my understanding of life as cyclical, where people and circumstances return until you've successfully learned your lesson (not that i ever learn lessons quickly, the same things have been reappearing for years... sigh...). and it's interesting to examine, to find or create meaning (depending on how much you need it and how hard you're trying) and wonder if it's really relevant or if you've just spent too much time in ap english.
i just realized how few hours i have until i get to drive to work in what will probably be snow, so i'm going to stop short of sharing and go to sleep and count on you to keep thinking about it instead. so: what motifs add beauty to your life?
